Blogging about Sails

Now there's a thing I know about sails, that they can sail against the wind.
Physics test today got me stumped.
When the apple or whatever fruit hit Newton on his noggin I hope he cried. Very loudly.

THE UTTER RELEVATION OF SAILS
(How boats go upwind, from the University of New South Wales)

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This is the part I understand. Wind flows around sail smoothly and deviates in direction, so that the sails exert a force on the wind, with an acceleration so and so and a reaction force of wind on sails in the opposite direction.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This is the part that I don't. No wait, I would have, if I hadn't left the bloody keel out! The University of New South Wales will take on from here...

Why doesn't the boat drift sideways? Well it does a little, but when it does, the keel, a large nearly flat area under the boat, has to push a lot of water sideways. The water resists this, and exerts the sideways force F(k) on the keel.

This cancels the sideways component of Fw. As to the forwards component: it accelerates the boat until the drag force Fd holding it back is big enough so that

Fw = -{Fk + Fd}.

So a boat can sail close to the wind: typically 45 degrees, although many high performance boats go closer than that.

A BOAT SAILING UPWIND CAN GO FASTER THAN ONE SAILING DOWNWIND!!!!!!!

Any idiot mathematics can make the physical laws of the universe, but only a sentient being can make them go mental.

Updated Blog err.. Picture!

If you haven't seen / noticed, hit Ctrl+F5 now and see the updated beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeg picture/banner of our class blog. I have taken the liberty of updating it - hope it's good enough ;)

Athena Camp.

EDITED!

Inner hand, outer hand, inner, outer, grab, PULL! =D

Hellooooo!
Okay I didn't have many chances (nor the mood, actually =X) to take many photos. But allow me to post a few happenings about the camp. Basically I think the camp was quite a good event for the class to have some bonding of didn't-really-seem-to-be-existent class spirit. The following photos will be those I took - but I will get photos from Mr. Ronnie Quek as well, so wait up! :D

Before we went for the camp, I guess many of us heard that it wasn't a very good camp, especially from the Artemis people and contemplated not going for the camp. Because I was somewhat persuaded to go, I went in the end (and didn't regret it). lol.

Before the start of the camp, some people prefered to have some happy moments in fantasy:

And in slumberland:

For the more exciting parts of the camp, I don't have the pictures (my phone was in the valuables bag most of the time :( ). Basically, I think the girls did a very great job for the Team Challenge Pryamid. And so did everyone else. But especially the girls because they weren't far in front of the guys. The whole class did a good job, completing the whole structure quickly.

Nitro crossing was the start of the let's-climb-up-peoples'-thighs "trend". Iskanda almost kena one of the flying shoes in an attempt to retrieve the rope from the middle of the structure, but he dodged it anyway. Of course, the instructors joined us upon request. Sheada (someone spell it properly if I spelt it wrongly) managed to do it for the first time since her sec3! Power of s6eints! =D

Vertical wall was quite cool also. I think everyone remembered yixiong's hooking (ok this term is suggestive, but I don't know what else to say =P) of people up the wall. And yeah, I think we managed to complete the activity rather quickly, unlike a previous group which tried using shoelaces tied together to form a sort of rope for people to jump and catch =P

Now, the wire-walking thing is called the Mohawk Walk (thanks to alex's memory). I think the way people grabbed on to others for support and fetish for poles were rather comical. *grumbles about my poor head, which jon conveniently sucked my IQ from :(*

Outdoor cooking - it's much better than all the outdoor cookings I've been to, at least. I think it was a good feeling - sitting together cooking/eating as a class. And two lessons to learn:
1. *cough* please listen to people who are holding knives.
2. potatoes + sausages + butter + salt + pepper in acceptable doses is marvelous! lol

Night activitiesy! We were playing this game called Animal Farm. Each group of people were supposed to make a certain sound of a certain animal, then we were to be blindfolded and lights off. In that environment, we were supposed to find our groupmates and stay together. Other than Jiexun and Sharon being two lost sheeps, the rest of us found our way together on the second try (due to some communication problem.. mosquitoes.. pfft! xP)

That night the guys wanted to sleep in the conference room but some other guys said it was padlocked, so we gave up and went back to the tent to sleep. However, those guys found a window that could be opened and went in to sleep. They didn't know how to adjust the air-con temperature so they slept in an environment of 18DC (HAHAHAA DUMB! =X).

The second morning was spent running in the rain to the conference room (resulting in total drenched-ness of everyone) and then back to the Leap of Faith. Pity that the girls didn't grab that thing, but good try anyway (: the guys who didn't make it as well. And of course - good job to all those who managed to grab it (on first or second try!)

Then there was the Giant Finger. Again, the two-men-at-the-bottom structure was used again and our superman yixiong went up to play with err.. complete the activity ;) of getting the tyre out and back into the ~4.5m tall pole. The cockpit was probably the only challenge which we didn't fare very well at first. Due to another miscommunication problem (mosquitoes.. pfft! xP) - that we didn't know we could throw the box across. But anyway, we used part of our rest time to complete the activity (:

Before dinner there was the rock wall and absailing. The highlight for the activity is - Sharon! She managed to climb all the way to the top, taking full advantage of Iskanda's intense belaying and support, swinging from one side to another. I think Mr. Quek managed to take a photo or two there - I'll ask from him some time. ^^

Campfire was interesting enough, especially with all of Iskanda's lame jokes. ;) There was a group which imitated the Mr Brown show on the Bak Chor Mee thingie, which I thought was quite good. But anyway.. after the campfire, we watched the night sky (because our instructors are the campfire I/Cs and they totally rock :P) lying on each other's tummies:

It was raining in the morning, so our tents were rather flooded and/or damp. That night Iskanda (who works part-time in starbucks) made us all hot chocolate! So sweet right? =D But but but! The main point is.. we broke into the conference room to sleep! While others checked that all the windows and doors were locked, we found a loose window and fiddled with it until it went open. So the whole class went in to sleep. At 4.30 the next morning we went out, though, so that the instructors won't find out (*cough* they don't even wake up that early). But anyway, Mr Quek saw us and didn't say much =P

Next day there was rafting but before that it rained, so we went conference room again. Sharon played with her hair:

Rafting was wet business, with two different raft structures, which would seemingly work:

The raft which worked:

The raft which was supposed to work:

The raft which was supposed to work and almost worked:

The raft which was supposed to work and almost worked and is working:

The raft which really worked:

Okay.. After that there was the jetty jump.
Jiexun was the first to taste the sea water:

Then (almost) everyone got in:

Trying to save a drowning cat =P:

End of camp:

Think I had lots of fun and don't regret going for the camp! Thanks 6E! =D

Fac Camp

Back from Athena Camp! I'm just glad we all had fun and through this short period of 3 days, understood each other even better. Now I noe Sing hwa is a snorer, Alex can't tell lame jokes, who's not a swimmer, who's afraid of heights, who's a leader and not, and that we are all great burglers =). Just hope this enthusiasm will last for whatever things we are doing together.

LAter.
